Computer education on data backup

Computers have become the most vital resource in many modern businesses, making a well working computer absolutely essential for business continuity across a number of industries.  Data backup and online security are two of the most important factors that need to be addressed by business, as if they are not – these two things alone can have disastrous consequences.  Any comprehensive computer education course should have a section on backup methodologies and practices, whether such a course is being addressed to school students or business people.

In the field of information technology, backup refers to the procedure of making a digital copy of certain data, in order to have multiple copies of this data in case of a data loss event.  These copies are referred to as backups, a term that can be applied to a number of different media.  In the modern age of computer technology, extensive backups are often copied onto computer hard drives, although copying onto CDs and DVDs is also a regular practice.  Magnetic tape, solid state storage, and remote backup services are also used as storage media for backup purposes.  Backups are useful for two main purposes, either the full restoration of a digital system during the disaster recovery process, or the restoration of individual files and folders after accidental deletion or corruption.

With about two thirds of Internet users having suffered from a serious data loss event at some time, backup is crucial in a wide range of situations.  It is vital that all school age students and business professionals have access to a comprehensive computer education program that includes information on how to backup data in a  number of ways.  For any modern business – time is money, making business continuity of extreme importance.  If a business is unable to operate even a single system for a short period, it can have lasting effects on consumer confidence and the ability of other systems to function correctly.  Employees need to be constantly learning the importance of digital backup, and reminded to implement it correctly and at regular intervals.

There are many ways to implement a data backup system, varying widely depending on the type of individual or business requirements.  A balance needs to be found in all situations between not backing up too much redundant data, and risking the backing up of too little.  Some well known backup systems include:  copying whole files, partial copying of changes within files, a filesystem dump, and a versioning file system.  During computer education at schools and individual businesses, it is important that students realise that backup is a process, and therefore needs to be carried out in a continual fashion.  Just as continuity is important in the everyday running of a business, so too is it important in context of the backup process.

Data backup is a very important subject for school students, in order to ensure that correct backup practices are learned and developed at an early age.  Education in backup procedures is equally important for those people already in the business world , as a way to ensure business continuity and keep overall efficiency as high as possible.  The more important data is, the more vital it is to create regular backups in a variety of locations.  However, absolutely all computer users should be taught the correct backup procedures for their particular systems – as all data that has been created is of importance to someone.
