Distance learning is one way you can learn a topic or subject that you’ve always wanted to, but never been able to because of distance or other imposing factors. In every state in practically every country, there are institutes of learning where you can study– but what if you’re prevented from accessing these places because you live too far away, have other commitments, or a disability? Now with distance learning you can enrol in a course and not have to leave your home (perhaps apart from the occasional exam). Having said that, there are even some places that can arrange for you to attend a local hall or centre to sit an assessment or exam so you don’t have to travel to the institute itself. Education is no longer restricted to attending a learning centre, and with the advent of the internet and online education, almost anyone can partake in a course of their interest or requirement. It’s simply a matter of finding the institute you wish to study with, and enquiring about enrolling (whether it be online, by phone or in person). Courses can even be free, or at a small cost. One you’ve enrolled, you will receive a user name and password for your course, whereby you can access the online classes and tutorials. Assignments are completed and handed in by email, and marks are returned by same. As mentioned, you may be required to sit an exam or assessment, which could be at a centre close to you.

There are many existing schools and learning centres that offer distance education. Previously, courses could be undertaken by post, with the lessons and assignments sent out and returned by mail. You had access to a tutor via the phone, and local libraries were your classroom and resource centre. Nowadays, everything is done on the computer and learning is no exception. It is a blessing to those who cannot attend a regular class, but would like to expand their knowledge whether it be to make more money or simply participate in a hobby. With distance learning practically everyone and anyone can gain an education, provided they have the time available to study, read and learn.
